Heavy obscuration in X–ray weak AGNs
We present observations in the 0.1–100 keV spectral band of 8 Seyfert 2 galaxies, obtained by means of BeppoSAX. These sources were selected according to their [OIII] optical emission line flux, to avoid biases against obscuration on the pc scale. All sources were detected. All of them are weak X–ray emitters, and most of them are characterized by prominent iron lines at 6.4–7 keV (EW> 500 eV) ...
متن کاملThe X-ray Background and Agns
Deep X–ray surveys have shown that the cosmic X–ray background (XRB) is largely due to the accretion onto supermassive black holes, integrated over the cosmic time. These surveys have resolved more than 80% of the 0.1-10 keV X–ray background into discrete sources. Optical spectroscopic identifications show that the sources producing the bulk of the X–ray background are a mixture of unobscured (...
متن کاملOptical and X-ray Variability of AGNs
I present new comparisons of AGN optical, UV, and X-ray variations. These reveal complex relationships between the different passbands that can change with time in a given object. While there is evidence from several objects that X-ray and optical activity levels are correlated on long timescales, variations on shorter timescales can occur independently. It is proposed that the combination of c...
متن کاملModelling the TeV γ - ray spectra of two low redshift AGNs
We discuss the results of modelling the TeV γ-ray spectra of two AGNs, Mkn 501 and Mkn 421 that have almost the same redshifts: z = 0.031 and z = 0.034, respectively. The effect of intergalactic γ-ray absorption is treated as an uncertainty in the measurement of the intrinsic spectrum. Although the objects differ, we obtain satisfactory fits for both of them in a synchrotron self-Compton scenar...
متن کاملAnisotropic illumination in AGNs The reflected component. Comparison to hard X-ray spectra from Seyfert Galaxies
We calculate the reflection component predicted by the anisotropic illumination model of Henri & Petrucci 1997. This component appears to be more important than for isotropic models. The overall X/γ spectrum is found to be strongly angledependent. When the accretion disc is seen with a nearly edge-on orientation the reflection hump is weak, while a face-on viewing angle leads to a proeminent re...
